1) Why did you decide to participate in the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant?
I wanted to join miss chinese vancouver for many reasons, but i think the two things that motivated me
more to be part of this pageant was: 1st- my grandfather. he passed away the beginning of 2006 and before
he passed he asked me to consider joining this pageant; so i guess you can say i did this in his memory.
2nd-there is stereotype image of how beauty queens or pageant contestants should be or look like. in
my opinion, society's vision of beauty is somewhat distorted. all you hear about is how young girls want to be and look like
someone else. no one wants to be themself anymore. I know i'm not SUPER skinny nor am I a supermodel. I knew
I would stand out tremendously standing next to the other contestants but i didn't care. i wanted to make a point
that as long as you're content with the way you look and you love yourself, it will show...confidence is the key. and besides
if everyone looked the same, the world would not be unique.
2)What was your reaction when Fairchild called and notified you were one of the 10 finalists?
I actually was notified by fairchild two weeks later than the other nine delegates. I flew out to new york
the day after tryouts and fairchild couldn't get a hold of me. when they FINALLY did get a hold of me... i
was shocked. i handed in my application VERY last minute...on the last day and five minutes before the cut off time.
the feeling going through my body talking to the fairchild representative was like a girl's first kiss...it's like you're
spinning and you don't know when you're going to stop.
3) Do you still keep in touch with all 10 of the contestants?
I'm not in town all the time, at the most three to four days. I try to keep in touch with the girls. we msn each
other and i'll email them or text message them to see how they're doing. i think it's hard to become close friends in such
a short period of time. yes, we did see each other 24/7...you also get to see the better and worst of each other; but
you only scratch the surface of each individual's character. besides i definitley think the two and a
half months we did spend with each other, it is something that we'll never forget and it's a moment in our lives that
we'll all cherish.
4)Which was your favorite segment in the pageant?
I think this year the pageant was done very well and each segment was very entertaining. i don't think i can pinpoint
just one segment I like more or less. BUT if you're making me choose, i would absolutley treasure the
evening gown and cheong sam portions more in the pageant. in an instant, I felt like a princess
and that is something i'll never forget. being on stage at that moment is indescribable. i also liked
our opening segment because i have a martial arts background and i loved how we showed the audience that girls can be tough
but elegant at the same time. i really enjoyed our 60's themed segment too. you can never go wrong with big hair and earrings!
5)I understand Bernice Liu is your favorite Miss Chinese Vancouver winner, would you tell us why?
Bernice is my favourite miss chinese vancouver winner because in my opinion, she has a different look than
the past winners. she has style, grace and poise, and in addition her overall look is more western. she has a killer
smile and she seems to have a pretty down to earth personality. she's also a cbc! cbcs will always have a place
in my heart!
thanks samantha for spending her christmas eve finishing this!!
